Louisville Water chose a 110-acre farm for the reservoir in 1876, and the reservoir opened in 1879 with a design by Chief Engineer Charles Hermany. The Gothic-style gatehouse dates to 1879 and was modeled on a building Hermany saw on the Rhine. It was named a Kentucky Historic Site in 2010. The neighborhood's own history runs alongside. Crescent Avenue was built on the former fairgrounds, which hosted fairs from 1853 to 1873.
